VCU African American Alumni Council Meeting

I. CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 10:05 a.m.
II. WELCOME
Mr. Wallace welcomed everyone.
III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
A motion was made to approve the June 21, 2008. Motioned. Seconded. Moved.
IV. OFFICER ELECTIONS
Mr. Powell explained the nomination and election process to the members. He stated that Faith Wilkerson has been nominated for president and nominations were still needed for secretary. Andre Foxx allowed his name to be nominated for the secretary position. Since there weren't any additional nominations from the floor, the members voted and approved the election of Ms. Wilkerson and Mr. Foxx. Mr. Wallace conducted the officer installation ceremony.
V. COMMITTEE REPORTS
Reunion
Mr. Powell reported that the reunion dance will be held at The Place at Innsbrook and the Marriott Richmond West will be the host hotel. The Program and Events Committee had their first conference call on September 17th to discuss Reunion Weekend and other potential AAAC activities. Next year the Theta Rho chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and the Eta Xi chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. will celebrate their 35th anniversary during the reunion.
Mr. Powell also reported that the basketball schedule has been released and their may be several opportunities for the AAAC to plan activities in conjunction with a VCU game. Those games include: 11/5 vs. Virginia Union, 11/12 vs. Virginia State, and 12/27 vs. Hampton. He also mentioned that the homecoming game will be 2/7 vs. William & Mary. Mr. Powell also stated that the VCU Alumni Association will have membership tables set up at various games and encouraged the AAAC members to consider volunteering to help promote membership.
Budget
Mr. Tyner shared a copy of the budget with the members and reviewed a number of highlights and answered questions.
Fundraising
Mr. Wallace discussed the need for the AAAC to create a committee to focus on generating revenue for the organization and made an motion to begin the process of amending the bylaws to allow for creation of a fundraising committee. Motioned. Seconded. Moved. The proposed amendment will be sent to the members before being formally ratified.
Scholarships
Mr. Powell reported that there weren't any updates on the status of changes to the university's policy on race based scholarships.
VCU Alumni Association Report
Mr. Robinson reported that the first VCU Alumni Association Board Meeting of the school year is scheduled for October 1. The board recently held their committee meetings in preparation for the October meeting.
VI. OTHER BUSINESS
On October 25th VCU will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a festival in Monroe Park. The VCU Alumni Association will have a tent at the festival and Mr. Powell encouraged AAAC members to attend.
Next AAAC meeting will be October 18.
